Tennis Club

The Hawthorne Tennis Club is pleased to have four beautiful courts for the use of residents and their guests as well as a practice wall. Two courts are even equipped with lights for nighttime play. The Club also has racquets and balls for loan to residents and their guests if they don’t have their own equipment.

Use of the courts is available at no cost. Round robin open play for all skill levels is held each morning depending upon the time of year. Potential players should consult the monthly Activities Bulletin for the current schedule of open play. Courts are also available for private play any time that they have not been previously scheduled. Weekly schedule sheets are located on the bulletin board next to Courts 1 & 2.

The club also sponsors a competitive team of players, which compete from time to time with other senior residential communities.

Monthly club meetings are held the first Thursday of each month during the months of October through April of the following year. Additionally, various fundraising events are held throughout that time period to fund expenses of the club.

For additional information you are cordially invited to contact the Program Office. They will direct your inquiry to the Tennis Club Chair.

Strumonicas

Strumonicas are a fun loving group who enjoy music. We cover all types of music from oldies to new. We invite everyone from beginners to professional – we love them all. We also invite spectators. We can help beginners on some instruments. Studies show that playing music stimulates the brain and can keep those little gray cells happy. We meet on Mondays and Fridays at 10:00 a.m. in the Hall by the organ. We hope to see you soon.

All States Club

From sea to shining sea – All States members – Originate from all over the United States!

We meet twice a year, one in the spring and then again in the fall.

Join us this fall for our Welcome Back Chicken Dinner and look forward to our Annual St Patrick’s Day Corn Beef and Cabbage Dinner in the spring.

Stained Glass

We use pieces of glass that are clear, colored or stained to make beautiful pieces of art. The class is taught by residents and everyone gets to work on their own project making stained glass items such as lamps, windows, sun catchers, etc. Many beautiful projects are made in our class. Watch for beginning classes to be given in the fall.

Spiritual Life Council

This is an ecumenical group providing worship services on special occasions, invocations at various group meetings and members are available to counsel, comfort and help anyone who seeks such service.

Sox and Boots

The Sox and Boots Dance Club provides a dance open to residents and friends. Our dances occur once a month on Friday evening from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Hall (excluding June, July and August). The music consists of old time rock and roll for the Sox and a little bit of country for the Boots. A live band provides the music.

sox-and-boots

We have several theme dances throughout the season: The Team Spirit dance to kick off the football season, Halloween dance, 50’s Sock Hop, Mardi Gras, our $1.00 Appreciation Dance and our Beach party. Door prizes are drawn from tickets purchased before the dance. We also have a “Share The Wealth” raffle, where all monies taken in are given back to the guests in several drawings. A fun filled evening to be had by all that attend.

Solos

Solos Club is open to all Hawthorne singles. We have a monthly social hour and dinner meeting on the third Friday of the month. Fun, fellowship and special programs are sure to capture your interest.

Softball

Softball is an outdoor activity for both men and women who enjoy slo-pitch baseball. Equipment is available, including gloves. Our softball league has become very active in playing with other leagues throughout the county.

Skip Bo

Skip Bo is deceptively simple and ingeniously designed. This classic game offers plenty of strategizing opportunities, or it can just make a nice backdrop to socializing and munching on potato chips.

Shuffleboard

As a resident of Hawthorne, you are automatically a member of the Hawthorne Shuffleboard Club. As such, you have access to one of the top shuffleboard programs in Florida – both on and off the court.

Our twenty-four courts are considered to be among the best courts in the state, and a favorite place for tournament play. During the year, we host six to eight multi-day State and District-level tournaments, along with eight in-house tournaments. Along with tournaments, we also field a team in the local Visitation League (from mid-November to early April), and are one of the hosts of the Summer Rotational Series.

On the courts, many current and  past Hawthorne residents have earned their way into the Northern District, and/or the Florida State Shuffleboard Hall of Fame. Players from Hawthorne continue to compete, and win, at the national level, along with a few who have represented the United States in international competition.

For those that would like to learn the sport, whether to just play for fun or to compete in tournaments, the club offers free introduction to shuffleboard lessons every Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. Just show up at the courts (the equipment needed is available at no charge), and see our instructor. The only requirement is that you wear closed toed, non-slip shoes.

Once you have taken a lesson, you can choose to hone your skills at one of our two weekly socials. Wednesday mornings we play three (12 frame) games starting at 8:30, and on Saturdays (November to March at 12:30 p.m. and April to October at 8:30 a.m.) you are invited to play Hoss Collar, a fun, easy to play variation of shuffleboard. Both are a good way to learn the game and meet your neighbors.

Regardless of whether you are looking for fun, or a competitive activity, you won’t find a sport that is easier on the body than shuffleboard. So come on down and we’ll help you learn how to play.

Please check the bulletin board for additional information, and/or follow us on Facebook at Hawthorne Shuffleboard Club.
