In 1974, Program Director, Dr. Earl Kauffman, appointed sisters Elsie Franta and Vi Ross to be “Trip-Arrangers” for the infant Hawthorne community. Hawthorne Travel Club was formally started in 1975. The Gillens became the first chairmen of the Club. In 1976, Dick Ray began his term(s) as co-chair/chair of the club and served until 1986.
“Every Hawthorne resident is a member of the Travel Club”. This quote in the July 1982 issue of the Penn Notes is from Dick Ray in his third term as chairman.
“Trips of varying duration – to distant places, scenic spots, famous restaurants or well-known attractions – will be added later, offering a wide choice of possible journeys to Hawthorne’s Travel Club members, meaning all of us.” As quoted by Marie L. Richardson in the July 1982 issue of Penn Notes.
Both of these quotes are still true today.
