Hawthorne Friends of Hospice

Our goal as a Hawthorne club is to host special events for residents who have a common interest in giving back to Cornerstone Hospice and to create a healing environment for residents who have suffered a loss. We will also provide education about all that Hospice does for patients and families.

Our general meetings are quarterly and we have a few special events each year. Watch the Bulletin and come out to the meetings to find out what we are all about. Membership is open to all residents, male and female, and is just $5.00 per year.

Our events will help Cornerstone Hospice patients and their families through donations to their organization. Join now, you won’t be sorry that you did.

Chair Volleyball

About UsOur OfficersPot Luck 2019RulesStasia Fields

New activity for both men and women of

all fitness levels.

Chair Volleyball is a fun way to exercise and be active. Because players are required to remain seated, Chair Volleyball provides a level playing field for both men ad women of all activity levels. It is a game that promotes rowdy comradeship and friendly competition among participants.

The game is played with a large lightweight ball and a five-foot high net. Courts are 14’ wide by 22’ deep (11’ on each side). There are twelve players to each court – six players seated on each side. Rules are similar to regular volleyball except players must stay seated in their chairs at all times! (Except running to retrieve an errant ball of course.) Regular participation can increase flexibility, stamina and skill.

You will want to become a part of this fun, energetic, fast growing activity at Hawthorne. For dues of only $2 a year, players are guaranteed one and one half hours of active, exhilarating fun!

Chair Volleyball at Hawthorne is played every
Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. in the Hall
.

Camping Club

Hawthorne’s Camping Club is not only alive and well, but busy having fun!!!!  We’ve been an active club for enough years now that we are having fun times during our monthly Campouts.  Typically we travel no more than 1-1/2 hours away from Hawthorne.  In addition, we hold monthly meetings in the Fine Arts room one evening a month, where we each bring a dish to share along with pleasant conversation before the start of the meeting.

If you live in Hawthorne and are a camper who loves interaction with other campers, come to one of our meetings to see what we are about.  Or join us at our Pot Luck Camping Dinner (usually followed by a campfire) on the Saturday night of our campouts to see us in action.

Call Mary Havens at 832-405-8865 for information.

Coloring Fanatics

Coloring Fanatics – Now you might ask yourself, what does coloring do for me?  According to the American Art Therapy Association, art therapy is a mental health profession in which the process of making and creating artwork is used to “explore feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem.”  So while this is not formal “Art Therapy” you can open a coloring book and get some of the benefits just listed.  For some people it helps with stress, and or depression.

We are a judgement free zone, and we love to socialize while we color.  It doesn’t matter how new, old, good or bad you are.  If you are interested, you don’t need a coloring book, we have plenty to choose from.  We also provide pencils, and markers, so you can try your hand at all coloring has to offer.  We meet on the first Monday and Friday of the month, and the fourth Monday and Friday of the month, in the Lemon/Lime Room from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

For questions or additional information please call the Hawthorne Activities Office at 352-360-6213 and they will be able to connect you with an officer of the club.

Florida Friendly Landscaping

Florida-friendly landscapes protect Florida’s unique natural resources by conserving water, reducing waste and pollution, creating wildlife habitat and preventing erosion. Under the mandates of Florida statute 373.185 these environmentally sustainable practices save time and money. Our goal is to educate and inspire residents (especially newcomers to Florida) to follow the nine principles of Florida-friendly landscaping. Experts in all aspects of Florida gardening and more will present programs at our monthly meetings.
